Frequently asked questions..

North Yorkshire Sound Machine PA Mic

This page hopes to answer most questions.
If it does not then ring or email us..

Can we give you a playlist ?
Certainly - especially for weddings, anniversaries and birthday parties we positively welcome your input. We expect people to have a favourite special song and we probably have it. If not we can certainly find it somewhere given sufficient notice.
Except for the obvious 'first dance' we will play all your chosen tracks when appropriate during the evening.

Please send playlists in an email or as an attachment to :
info@nysm.co.uk

Do you send a contract ?
Yes we can - usually by email or we can just confirm via email or verbally on the phone.

How can we communicte our requirements to you ?
In any way you wish is the realistic answer ! Some simply email us back and forth whilst others prefer to ring and discuss details, and this is generally the best method as the date gets closer and more information can be gleaned. Sometimes we just get a text message to our mobile phones but this can get very time-consuming after the initial enquiry and confirmation stage.

To pass on playlists - email a list or attach a Word document to info@nysm.co.uk is by far the best way.

Do you require a deposit ?
Yes - a £50 non-returnable deposit will ensure your booking is firm.

Do you hire out disco or PA gear on its own ?

No - we have invested too much time and expense to allow the disco gear to go out unsupervised.

Do you play longer than arranged if asked ?
Hotels and pubs have a responsibility to the general public and their license depends on many factors. As a matter of course we always ask the venue duty manager the time they want us to stop the music. Their decision is final on the night so you would have to ask them rather than us.

Do you do Karaoke ?
We leave karaoke to the professionals but we do have a small selection of professional karaoke disks on CD & DVD if anyone wants to have a go.
We also have provision to knock out the vocals on a conventional CD enough to sing along with. You will have to know the lyrics as this will not be displayed on any screen unlike the professional ones mentioned above. If you do have a favourite karaoke disk then by all means bring it along!

A friend wants to perform at the party - can they use your system ?
By all means yes. Give us an idea of what is required, for example are they playing an instrument, are there a few of them or solo. Are they working to backing tracks etc.

Call us and we will sort something out.

Unless we have to hire in something like a grand piano we will not charge extra. In fact we would ask you to hire the piano!

If we think it is too loud will you turn it down ?
Of course. We have never been too loud over the last 25 years and are not likely to be at your party.
Likewise if any of our lights are driving someone to distraction let us know.
We have strobe lights which we sometimes use in short bursts but we will ask the crowd in advance.

Do you use smoke machines ?
We do have one and it certainly does add atmosphere to the lighting by showing the beams but most venues do not like them as they can set of fire alarms.

We generally ask the management and if they say no we put it away.

How long does it take you to set up and how much room do you need ?
Usually we allow a minimum of 1 hour for venues we know. If access is difficult with stairs or lifts we will add extra time. please note that this time is not added to the cost of the booking. Realistically, we set up the sound first and then add lighting to suit the room layout.

To pack up we also require an minimum of 1 hour. In certain circumstances we may be forced into dismantling certain elements just before the end of the evening to ensure we can be out as fast as possible. This rarely happens but it has been known for the venue (Usually Working Men's Clubs) to want to clear the building and set the alarms 20 minutes after the last dance so we have to comply.

As far as space is concerned - we always set up on our own table 6 foot wide and can place speakers on the outside of this so taking up around 10 foot wide by 6 foot deep. (3m x 2m)
Generally we like more space and often set up at the side of the dancefloor but keep the speakers and lights just off. Every venue is different of course and our main concern with any setup is to avoid trailing cables on the floor and any Health & Safety issues.

Can you leave the disco gear and pick it up the day after?
We try not to do this if possible. It depends on what we are doing the next day and if we can get in to collect the gear at our convenience. We cannot jeopardise another booking because the equipment is locked in a club.
It also depends on distance of course. In any event we would take away small items.
Often the venue will not allow gear to be stored overnight as they need to reset the room for another function.

Are your prices written in stone?
We will endeavour to be flexible in our prices if we can but we know from venus that our prices are very competitive and reasonable for the professional services we offer.

We are, however, prepared to alter our rates for repeat bookings, residencies etc
