How to Apply for a Neighbourhood Watch Sign
 

How do I apply for a Neighbourhood Watch Street Sign?

  1. Obtain application form and instruction pack from local Police Station.

  2. Read all instructions contained in pack.

  3. Have members of scheme agree Nine (9) Point Policy Document.

  4. Send a completed application form and sketch plan of where the signs are to be sited, including lamp standard number if applicable, to Police Headquarters (address shown on application form).

  5. Payment for the signs should accompany the application. Cheques should be made payable to 'North Yorkshire Police Authority'.

  6. Include any previous application forms for this scheme.

  7. If the signs are to be located within the highway limits the Neighbourhood Watch Administrator will arrange Highway Authority approval.

What do I do when I receive notice of approval? 

Approval and pro-forms will be sent under separate cover from Police Headquarters.

•  Check and complete pro-form "A" (Notice to Local Planning Authority) attach a second sketch plan of where signs are to be sited, at least 14days prior to erecting sign.

•  Complete pro-form "B" (Notice to Highway Authority - Request for Inspection) attach third sketch for ease of location.

•  Complete pro-form "C" and return to Police Headquarters when signs are in position.


Policy of the North Yorkshire Police in relation to street signs for Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in the County . . . . .

  1. Each Neighbourhood Watch Scheme must be approved by the North Yorkshire Police before application is made for street signs to be erected.

  2. The Co-ordinator must obtain authority from the Chief Constable prior to the erection of a sign. The applicant must indicate clearly where the sign is to be displayed.

  3. If the sign is to be erected on highway land eg. on street furniture, approval must be gained from the Highway Authority and any other appropriate Authority. Highway Approval will be obtained on your behalf by the North Yorkshire Police.

  4. One standard design of sign will be used and in order to achieve this all orders, together with payment for signs, shall be made via the Neighbourhood Watch Administrator at Police Headquarters, Newby Wiske Hall.

  5. Members of the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme will be responsible for the purchase, erection and maintenance of the signs. Signs erected within the highway shall be erected to the satisfaction of the Highway Authority who will inspect them free of charge and then cove for Public Liability.

  6. The Police and Highways Authority do not accept any responsibility should the approved signs be damaged or vandalised or reach the end of their useful life.
    Responsibility for their removal or replacement rests with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.

  7. Sponsorship for the signs may be sought but acknowledgement on signs is not permitted.

  8. Signs must not be displayed in excess of 3.6 metres above ground level at their highest point and must not exceed 0.2 square metres in area (approximately 18" x 18"). When a sign is erected adjacent to a footpath or in any area used by pedestrians, the underside of the sign shall not be lower than 2.1m (6' 9") above the ground level.

  9. If the scheme ceases to operate the sign must be removed within 14 days, and the County Surveyor and North Yorkshire Police notified accordingly.
